The Newmarket and District group of the Ramblers’ Association was formed in 1982. From the outset, due to the peculiar location of the town, in Suffolk but almost completely surrounded by Cambridgeshire, the group attracted members from both counties.  This is still the case today although there is now an East Cambridgeshire group in existence,  based on the adjoining District Council area.  The Newmarket group’s official catchment area extends along the western fringe of Suffolk including the expanding town of Haverhill.

Full and/or half day walks are arranged on Sundays throughout the year over a wide area, varying from 5 miles at a leisurely pace to 10 miles plus for the more energetic. During the summer months, there are also Wednesday evening walks of up to 5 miles in the local area.  When there are no evening walks, mid week morning walks take place on Wednesdays  for rest of the year (with a break mid winter) and will generally be near a pub where lunch can be obtained.

Social events and coach trips, giving the opportunity to walk into a place of interest, also feature in the group’s activities.

The group welcomes non-members to give rambling a try but will expect membership of the Association to be taken out after a few walks.
